The Department of Urban Planning and Disaster Management was established in 2003; the graduate program was set up in 2011 and the executive master's program in 2015. Aiming at fostering professional students, who are able to deal with complicated and interdisciplinary issues on urban planning for disaster managements, the department provides education integrating both theory and practices in spatial planning and disaster managements. In order to enable students to have advanced skills for meeting market demands, the application of Geographic Information System (GIS) and the use of digitalised urban data are designed as the core course in our training programmes.High-level young talents in 3D design and disaster management are cultivated through the combination of core curriculum local planning and disaster management, and practical training of field experience.The department currently has 10 full-time faculty members, who all hold doctoral degrees from prestigious universities around the world, and 11 part-time faculty members, who have rich experiences in governments and consultancies. The research outcomes and professional abilities of our faculty members are widely recognized by academia, governments, and associated companies. Many faculty members are regularly appointed by both local and central governments as committee members for reviewing various kinds of environmental and planning programs. The department provides a undergraduate program for 58 students, a master's program for 10 students, and an executive master's program for 12 students every year. Every semester, studio is conducted in the form that students are grouped and supervised to deliver practical projects. Intensive discussion between teachers and students and amongst students is the major characteristics of the studio wherein students are encouraged to learn by doing. The department also provides professional spaces, such as a workshop for graduation design, computer laboratories for disaster simulation, and professional classrooms for planning and design.Our students actively participate in community service and planning projects. In 2014, students and teachers jointly completed planning projects, such as the Community for Cross-generational Living in GuiShan District, the Revitalization of Historical Areas in Taoyuan City, Disaster-proofing of Residential Areas in Banciao City, and so on. As for community services, students are widely involved in the works regarding disaster prevention and mitigation in different local communities.
